Predatory Practices At Anthem College

New Options For Loan Forgiveness Due to Recent Closures

Options now available for private and federal loan forgiveness

Predatory Practices at Anthem College

After suffering years of declining enrollment, and being unable to sell because the Department of Education would not grant approval, Anthem College closed its doors last year. Many former students are qualifying for Anthem College loan forgiveness. The school was owned by Anthem Education Group. Other brands owned by Anthem Education Group were Anthem Career College, Anthem College Online, Anthem Institute, High-Tech Institute, Morrison University, and The Bryman School of Arizona.

Anthem Education Group released this statement on the day of the closure: “Despite our best efforts, Anthem Education was unable to secure timely Department of Education approval to complete the sale of 9 of its campuses to International Education Corporation (IEC). We are disappointed in this lack of regulatory approval, and as a result have been forced to make the difficult decision to close the schools today. We are continuing to put all of our efforts behind securing teach out and transfer opportunities for our affected students to ensure they may continue pursuing their educational goals, and are hopeful for a positive outcome.” [1]

A Senate report[2] showed Anthem to be fighting bankruptcy for some time, and highlighted some troubling discoveries in Anthem’s recruiting process. According to the report, “An internal Anthem document lists the ‘characteristics of [a] typical student.’ The full list reads: ‘Single parent, Economically Disadvantaged, Unemployed or underemployed, Individuals that lack an outside support system, Low Self Confidence, Low Self Esteem, Have a desire to prove to themselves and family their success.’”
